Sustainability at the Y

Our Philosophy

Our Philosophy

Through its mission, The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh prioritizes the policy and practice of sustainability as a means to enrich lives within our local and global community. As public servants and community leaders, we challenge ourselves to think broadly and work progressively to demonstrate sustainability through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.

Volunteer with us at the Homewood Brushton YMCA on Saturday, November 3rd.  We will be adding fruit trees to our urban garden with the help of our friends at Grow Pittsburgh and Tree Pittsburgh.

Building Green

Healthy Buildings, Healthy Bodies

The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh has recognized the importance of building structures that conserve natural resources, promote the local economy, and provide a healthy, robust space. For each construction project, the Y evaluates the best method to minimize environmental impacts throughout development and operation. Through innovative design solutions, we are able to create healthy, safe spaces for our community.

Thelma Lovette YMCA

Opened in April of 2012, the Thelma Lovette YMCA was designed and built to meet LEED New Construction Silver Level Certification by local talent. Sustainability is integrated into the design, development, and operation of the community facility. Community members are able to enjoy the rooftop garden that provides fresh produce to residents of the Centre Avenue YMCA, childcare center composed of natural materials that are low-emitting, or the day lit fitness center that overlooks the bustling Centre Avenue cooridor.

To learn more about the sustainability of the Thelma Lovette YMCA please go to the Thelma Lovette YMCA LEED Tour or visit the branch for a complimentary tour.
