The Allegheny YMCA’s facility includes a gymnasium, newly renovated strength training center, a brand new 22 piece cardio wellness center with cardio theatre, indoor pool, indoor running track, handball/racquetball/squash courts, spinning studio, group exercise studio, meeting rooms, carpeted locker rooms and men’s residence rooms.
In 1919 the Allegheny YMCA was organized to replace the former Boy’s Branch of the YMCA of Pittsburgh, the North Side YMCA and the Manchester YMCA. On November 6, 1927, the YMCA building at 600 West North Avenue was dedicated and featured a modern gymnasium, pool, bowling alleys, resident rooms, club rooms, and a cafeteria. At this time, the Y’s primary function was to offer programming targeted directly to grade school boys, high school boys, and employed young men.
By 1980, the Allegheny YMCA had expanded its services to become more involved in the community. Currently, the Y offers programs in health and wellness, after school child care, recreational sports, and housing for men, meeting the changing needs of the community.
The Allegheny YMCA takes an active role in the North Side Community, in particular, with its Campaign for Strong Communities. The campaign supports families and children in our community by funding the Building Bridges program which provides child care assistance, membership assistance, residence assistance and health and wellness programs for people of all ages.
