The Western Area branch of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh has always advocated personal attention for members that is delivered in a caring environment by staff who are well-trained and motivating. Our goal at the Western Area YMCA is to put Christian principles into practice through programs to build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all.
The Health and Wellness Facilities at the Western Area YMCA provide members with a state of the art cardiovascular room with Cardio Theatre, strength training area and Nautilus studio. Programs such as yoga and pilates help to build a “strong mind” and programs such as youth sports, summer day camp and school age child care help to build “strong kids”.
The Western Area YMCA has an extensive history of providing programs to the western suburbs of Pittsburgh. Serving a community located in an industrial area, the Coraopolis YMCA offered social, religious and civic programs. A well-equipped building was constructed in 1911, which included a gymnasium, swimming pool, bowling alleys and club rooms. In 1933, the Coraopolis YMCA became part of the YMCA of Pittsburgh and expanded its services with the addition of basketball, softball and bowling leagues for employees of the industrial community in which it served. The community children were served during the summer months through YMCA programs conducted at its playground. By the 1970s, the facility had severe deterioration and replacement of the facility was desperately needed. A former racquet club was purchased near the Pittsburgh International Airport in 1983 and the facility was reopened as the Western Area YMCA.
The Western Area YMCA shares the YMCA’s character development focuses of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. It is our goal to incorporate these values into our programs and share them with our members, program participants, staff and volunteers to “build strong kids, strong families and strong communities” in the western suburbs today, tomorrow and many years into the future.
The Western Area does not have a swimming pool. However, members who have an association wide membership are able to use the pools at any branch of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh. Local hotel pools are used to conduct youth and adult swim lessons along with water aerobics.
I am not a YMCA member, but can I use your YMCA while I am in town?
Several local hotels in the area have established relationships with the Western Area where their hotel guests can use our facility.
The YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh is committed to providing quality programs and services to everyone in the community. This is made possible thanks to our generous donors through our Campaign for Strong Communities. Persons with household incomes below $50,000 may be eligible to take part in our Building Bridges rate system. A pre-determined monthly rate for membership and a weekly rate for day camp has been established. To apply for Building Bridges, come in and let one of our staff discuss your options. Bring with you a copy of your most recent tax return to determine your income based rate.
