The Collegiate YMCA connects university and high school students to the community in service and leadership through education, outreach, and international work.
We build the citizens of tomorrow. Unlike what many think of when conjuring images of the local Y, a pool, gymnasium and health and wellness center, our branch has programming that reaches beyond the boundaries of four walls into the fabric of the Pittsburgh community. The Collegiate YMCA is a student centered organization dedicated to developing ethical leaders of exemplary character by applying the principles of the YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh. Collegiate YMCA programs bridge university students to the surrounding area to serve others, gain leadership, apply learning, and enrich lives while impacting the community by instilling the YMCA character development strategy: Caring - Honesty - Respect - Responsibility
Established in 1905 at the University of Pittsburgh, the Collegiate YMCA has served the student body and the community at large through volunteering. Through the years the YMCA has provided counseling, alternative spring breaks, off-campus housing, student employment, chartered bus trips home, volunteer placement in YMCA programs and community agencies, as well as freshman orientation.
We seek to attract and unite in active service, individuals of all backgrounds to form a community of young people committed to promoting personal growth and leadership.
Benefit: The YMCA believes in providing members with personal attention by a well-trained staff in a caring environment. Community Helping Alliance for Neighborhood Goals in Education and Service (CHANGES)
(Internship available)
CHANGES unites high school students from diverse backgrounds and communities in the Pittsburgh area to promote community change. CHANGES brings students from culturally, racially, economically and socially diverse backgrounds together in an effort to minimize prejudice and increase understanding among youth in city and suburban partnership schools.
The program kicks off with a team building event in the fall. Students experience a "Day in the Academic Life" of a partner school; a diversity workshop is held in the winter; and the program closes with a symposium event in the spring. Students participate in service projects. Past service projects included: USMC Toys for Tots, World Vision, Keep it Clean Oakland, YMCA Camp Kon-O-Kwee, Lutheran Senior Services, the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank, among others.
Y-CHANGES is currently in the following Pittsburgh area high schools: Pittsburgh Public Schools: Perry, Oliver, Schenley, Westinghouse Suburban Schools: Upper St. Clair, South Park, North Hills, Shaler, Quaker Valley, Gateway
The YMCA Y&G Club promotes awareness among high school students about current state issues and social problems. The purpose of the program is to bring the workings of state government alive to students. Clubs are organized in local high schools, where students discuss public policies, organize and articulate ideas, participate in the legislative process and obtain a better understanding of governmental functions. Y&G enables high school students to understand the democratic process through active involvement in the complete legislative process. More importantly Y&G promotes leadership, citizen participation and civic responsibility.
Y&G Clubs meet at Schenley and Taylor-Allderdice High Schools.
Project Y-H.O.P.E raises awareness of the issues related to the AIDS pandemic, which include health disparities, socio-economical and cultural differences. Y-H.O.P.E will adopt an AIDS project in Africa as part of its international outreach initiative.
