Branch Description

The current home of the Centre Avenue YMCA, on Centre Ave and Francis Street, was built in 1922. The Y served as one of the only social and recreational facilities in the region for African Americans from the 1920′s to the 1950′s.

The Centre Ave Y also served as the dormitory for numerous African American students attending the University of Pittsburgh who were not allowed to reside on campus. Declared a Historic Landmark in 1994, the Centre Ave YMCA continues to be dedicated to serving the community. Currently the Y offers a variety of programs that serve basic needs through housing, health and food programs as well as youth development, career and workforce development and more.
