IT FEELS GOOD TO DO GOOD
“As a coach I preach health and wellness to others. As a dad, I’m grateful my
whole family can walk the talk at the Y.”
Coach Zik and his wife Nia have proudly raised six children in Homewood.
But sustaining a large family with four kids in college will stretch anyone’s
budget. Forced to make choices, and knowing how important maintaining
physical health and well-being would be to the future success of their
children, Zik and Nia sought membership assistance from the Homewood Y
in 2006. Since then the whole family has regularly participated in everything
the Y has to offer. 13 year old Jahi is a regular in the boys’ basketball program,
Zik himself works out daily, and the older children always stop in to see
friends and staff while home from college. Simply put, the Y is their home away
from home.
“My children have grown and succeeded thanks to
hard work, discipline and the generosity of others.”

Branch Description
The Homewood-Brushton Family YMCA provides programming for all ages and is a place where the entire community can gather. Families prosper as they come together on the road to healthy living, social responsibility and youth development.
The programs and services offered by the Homewood Y include an employment center, computer lab, tutoring, counseling, youth prevention and food pantry. Members enjoy a fully equipped modern wellness center, sauna, steam room, a full gymnasium, indoor track, locker rooms, a multipurpose and meeting rooms.
In 1916 the Homewood-Brushton YMCA was holding meetings at a community Church at the corner of Bennett Street and Homewood Avenue. During this time churches were providing mock Olympic competitions and father-son banquets for boys, as well as family picnics to unite the community. The house at 7140 Bennett Street was purchased in 1941 to be used as the permanent site of the Homewood-Brushton YMCA.
