YMCA Camp Soles is proud to announce the participation in the American Camp Association’s® (ACA’s) Explore 30 Camp Reading Program. During the summer children experience “summer learning loss” when they are not involved in high quality programs with opportunities for skill building. Research indicates that participation in intentional programs, like camp, can help stem summer learning loss.

The Explore 30 Camp Reading Program addresses summer learning loss by providing our campers with at least 30 minutes of reading time per day.  We excited to integrate this program into our Day and Resident Camps this summer! We take our role in a child’s development seriously and strongly believe that this program helps build the whole child.

For information on the ACA’s national Explore 30 Program visit their website at http://www.acacamps.org/explore30.

Camp History

Camp Soles is a 263 acre YMCA resident camp in the Laurel Highland Mountains of southwestern Pennsylvania. Through the dedication and leadership of Y professionals, Frank T. Soles and Walter C. Shaw, Camp Soles opened and started to provide camping services on May 22, 1955 as an outreach of the McKeesport YMCA. Along with the development of Camp Soles also came the creation of Lake Tris, an 18 acre man-made lake, ideal for swimming, canoeing, kayaking and sailing. Through the years Camp Soles has offered a variety of acitvities from horseback riding and snow skiing on the slopes of “Skunk Hill” to include a zip-line and mountain biking.

Our goal and Philosophy: While camp activities may seem to be the focus of camp, these are actually the tools we use to teach campers about becoming responsible adults and making lifelong friendships. Our focus is to instill the core values of Honesty, Caring, Respect and Responsibility among each and every camper.

Resident Camp

Resident Camp

Ages 7-16 Years Old

Our Resident Camp program is what we are best known for and is the highpoint of any Sole’s experience. We provide resident camp programming for campers ages 7-16. Campers stay in cabins with others of the same gender and similar age range. Each cabin is led by our highly trained, passionate, and college-aged Counselors. Our Resident Camp experience provides campers the opportunity to gain self-confidence, a sense of independence, and the skills to make new friends.

During the week, campers will have the chance to create their own adventure. There are individual activity periods where campers can choose which activities they really want to focus on; archery, arts and crafts, canoeing, gardening, rock climbing, and much more! There are also activities that each cabin will experience together; Ga-Ga, Zip Lining, Swimming, Hiking, and more! Our camp family gathers together each evening for a group activity. Campfires, night hikes, capture the flag, and famous Soles Disco Fever!

Health and Safety

At YMCA Camp T. Franks Soles, the health and well-being of our campers is our foremost concern. Our Camp Nurse lives on site in our Health Center. We instill the importance of all safety policies – we require campers and staff to wear helmets and harnesses while climbing, lifejackets while participating in any boating activities. Our High Adventure and Waterfront are staffed by properly trained and certified staff at all times.

Our Great Staff

Camp Soles also understands the imperative need for positive role models in the lives of today’s young people. Each summer a group of enthusiastic and kid-loving staff come to Soles to ensure all of our campers have a safe and fun summer camp experience. A well-trained, passionate staff is crucial to an exciting and unforgettable summer camp experience. All staff members undergo an extensive and professional training program together in preparation for our campers’ arrival.

Summer Camp Pricing

It is our belief at YMCA Camp T. Frank Soles that no child or family shall be turned away due to inability to pay. We realize that different families have different abilities to pay, so we created a three tier pricing program. Below is a list of our rate descriptions. The best part is that you pick which tier your family fits in. This is strictly an honor system and in no way influences the quality of the experience your child will receive. Further financial assistance is available, if needed. When filling out the registration form, please select the rate in which you will be paying.

Tier A (Actual Cost of Camp +Scholarship Help)

For families who are blessed to be able to help others Tier A pricing provides additional funds for Camp Scholarships. Balancing a camp budget while creating opportunities for as many families as possible to participate is a major challenge. This price includes expenses for staff, maintenance, food, programs, supplies, wear and tear/depreciation, and supports families/campers that need additional assistance.

Tier B (Actual Cost of Camp)

This is the full cost of sending a child to camp. This price includes expenses for staff, maintenance, food, programs, supplies, and wear and tear/depreciation.

Tier C (Partially Subsidized)

Our partially subsidized rate is for families who can afford a little more but are still unable to pay the full cost of camp. Subsidy comes from our Building Bridges Campaign.

If you have any questions about our staff, our health and safety procedures, or our tiered pricing; please feel free to contact the camp office 814-352-7217 or by email at campsoles@ymcapgh.org.
