“You don’t understand. I have to keep
coming to Achievers. It’s the only place
I can go where somebody actually notices I’m here.”

Those were the words tearfully spoken by
Christian, a 13 year old member of the Y
Achievers program at the Hazelwood Y.

For two years he’d struggled in the program—refusing to
participate, prone to angry outbursts and frequent fights. At
school he was failing classes and often suspended.
A Y staff member finally pulled Christian aside and
warned him he would be expelled if his behavior
didn’t improve. Christian’s tearful response had
an immediate impact: the program coordinators
developed an individualized improvement plan and
worked with him one on one to help address his
many issues. Since then Christian has made vast
improvements at both the Y and school. He still
struggles, but his attitude and interest have changed
and Christian now thinks and talks about his future.
